Making Connections: Interdisciplinarity in HE and Beyond
Wednesday 04 June 2014
(4:00-6:00pm)
Ramphal Building, University of Warwick
Interdisciplinary studies offer a way of making connections across the divisions of faculties and subject area. Many of the most serious problems we face today, such as climate change, sustainability and inequality, can only be fully engaged with by taking an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approach. Outside universities, interdisciplinarity is embedded in practice to such an extent that it’s a term not often heard.
We were joined by 20 undergraduate students for an exploration of interdisciplinarity. We looked at the range of IATL modules running in 2014-15, and what it can mean to study in an interdisciplinary way within Higher Education. We thought about the challenges and opportunities of interdisciplinary study within Warwick and how the skills and knowledge it fosters can help students both during their studies and after they graduate.
The event was introduced by Dr Nicholas Monk, IATL’s Deputy Director and students then experienced three bite-size chunks of interdisciplinary studies with the 2014-15 module leaders, before a round up session led by Naomi Alsop, Teaching Fellow, for questions and discussion.
The event was open to all undergraduates who will be studying at Warwick in 2014-15.
A certificate of attendance was provided for students.
Further information about the IATL modules can be found here.
