Alice and Nadine wanted to share their reflections on running the workshop at ICUR: how it fits into Reinvention's mission, and what they enjoy about doing this work.
Alice:
‘For me, running workshop sessions like this is what Reinvention is all about! Publishing our biannual journal and special issues is just one part of Reinvention's bigger project of trying to raise the profile of undergraduate research and empower undergraduate students in academia. It's great to properly get out in the active undergraduate research world and speak to students who are at the very beginning of their research journeys. I really enjoy communicating Reinvention's ethos to interested students, and hopefully demystifying the intimidating world of "publication" as much as we can!’
‘The interactive sections of a workshop are fun, one of the activities we do is go through a mock abstract together, and then ask for comments on the abstract from the group based on the journal's editorial guidelines. At the ICUR session, Nadine and I had planned content and points we wanted to cover, but we heard the students' thoughts and ideas which was so much more interesting. We learnt from the group and have taken on their thoughts for our next session. It's such a good example of the benefit of academia as a community, where students play an active co-creative role-- something that we are so passionate about at Reinvention!’
Nadine:
‘I found running this workshop with Alice to be a really exciting experience!
Given that Reinvention is an online journal, hosting this workshop was a great way to engage with and form connections with members of our community. Hopefully this encouraged more students to have their research recognised, furthering Reinvention’s mission to uplift undergraduate research. It was really inspiring to see so many undergraduates enthusiastic about publishing their work and keen on learning the nuts and bolts of an academic publication. As an undergrad interested in research myself, I know that a major barrier to research is how overwhelming and daunting academia is, and how tough it can be to even get your foot in the door. Hence, I thoroughly enjoyed supporting other undergraduates in their research journey through this workshop, from breaking down the structure of a paper to answering questions from students keen to get their research published. Reinvention’s goal of supporting undergraduate research is so important to me, and I hope that through this workshop, we’ll see more students motivated to explore research.’
