IATL case studies on Education for Sustainable Development:
MSc in Humanitarian Engineering
Since December 2015, IATL supported the development of the Warwick-based MSc in Humanitarian Engineering, initially as a strategic funded project before co-developing and hosting the programme when it was launched in 2018/19. The project included receiving HEFCE funding, involved developing interdisciplinary training in the field of Humanitarian Engineering covering themes related to the UN Sustainable Development. IATL Modules and Education for Sustainable Development
Current IATL modules mostly focus on the nature of our interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary provision, feature elements of ESD including modules such as Thinking Water, The Slow Movement, Design Thinking for Social Impact and Understanding Wellbeing. IATL’s Rethinking Health Sciences explores science, life sciences and medicine to rethink the benefits and limitations of science and medicine in the Covid era and highlights SDG 3 alongside fostering the development of critical thinking and communication skills. Warwick Nest
IATL supported funded projects such as the Warwick Climate Negotiating Forum 2021, which was a collaboration between staff and students to run a ‘mock COP’ conference involving student in delegate roles and supporting roles aligned with the IATL modules, Challenges of Climate Change & Achieving Sustainability. IATL also collaborated with Engineers Without Borders and Estates on the Warwick Nest, which is a project to support students create a sustainable, low-carbon building on campus, whilst exploring how they could be more involved in their own teaching and learning through acting as co-producers. Global Connections Migration Project 2022
IATL offer ESD extracurricular activities to all Warwick students such as the EUTOPIA Global Connections cross-university initiative, which focuses on complex, transdisciplinary climate change and environmental issues. This includes recent discussions with EUTOPIA partners on enhancing the spring-term Project Week on Climate-related themes.
