Undergraduate Research Influencing Policy

Posters in Parliament (PiP) is the annual sister event of the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) and brings together a remarkable collection of the best undergraduate research from across the country. Attended by MPs, civil servants and policymakers, as well as academics and fellow students, the event is an amazing opportunity for student researchers to discuss their work with such influential people.

The Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) at the University of Warwick has been part of BCUR since its inception in 2011, supporting students to attend BCUR and Posters in Parliament, and since 2023, it's been organising Posters in Parliament on behalf of BCUR.

Selection to present at PIP is open to all academic disciplines from students who exhibited at the British Conference of Undergraduate ResearchLink opens in a new window (BCUR). Criteria for selection consist of both academic excellence and the quality of the poster design. Here are the students who represented Warwick over recent years. In March 2025, IATL for the University of Warwick hosted Posters in Parliament 2025 in Porcullis House, Houses of Parliament, London. The event welcomed student researchers from 24 higher education institutions, including two posters and four students representing Warwick. All students presented and discussed their work with key policymakers, MPs and Peers and had the opportunity to connect with fellow student researchers from across the UK and Northern Ireland. Many presenters and guests also enjoyed a walking tour of the House of Lords and attended the optional workshop 'Getting your Voice Heard in UK Parliament'.

Warwick was represented by student researchers:

Oliver Murray, Ahina Ip, Katie Thornton who presented "A Regional Lens on a National Crisis: Antimicrobial Resistance in Coventry and Warwickshire"
Gleb Berloff who presented "Investigating magnetic activity cycles in Sun-like stars, using data from the K2 mission"

In February 2024 Warwick was proud to take two students to Posters in Parliament, to present and discuss their work with key policymakers and MPs. They also had the opportunity to connect with fellow student researchers from across the UK and Northern Ireland. Congratulations on attending this event:

In May 2023 Posters in Parliament was re-inaugurated and hosted by the University of Warwick. The poster event was complemented with an optional walking tours of the House of Lords and a 'Getting your Voice Heard in UK Parliament' workshop.

The University of Warwick was proud to have supported two students to exhibit their research posters and discuss their work at the heart of British political power.

In 2021 & 2022 Posters in Parliament was paused due to COVID.

In 2020 Warwick took two students to present their work in poster format, the students were selected from over 100 Warwick students who submitted abstracts to present at BCUR20. One of our students Adrian Racovita won the competition.

Adrian quoted. "Undergraduate research is growing in popularity and the novel findings and ideas of young scientists driven by enthusiasm are worthy of praise at the highest level. I have always regarded knowledge communication highly, especially when it involves multidisciplinary cohorts. Nowadays, when the boundaries between study areas are progressively dimmer, opportunities to acquire new visions on how to integrate different approaches are essential to make the next remarkable discovery. To quote the great John Haldane, ‘if we must educate our poets and artists in science, we must educate our masters, labour and capital, in art.’ Posters in Parliament was a great opportunity to present the perspective of my research to a noteworthy audience and in an outstanding environment. What I enjoyed most however was its competitive aspect which added a unique charm to the whole event. I am equally grateful and proud of the hard work that ultimately resulted in me winning the first prize and I want to thank my supervisor, Prof. Alfonso Jaramillo as working under his mentorship has shown me how intriguing and exciting research actually is."

In 2019, two Warwick students were selected to present their posters. The event, hosted by the University of Sussex, was held on Thursday 7 March 2019 in Portcullis House, London. The Warwick students spoke to fellow undergraduate researchers and academics, as well as Government officials and MP's, including MP's local to the University of Warwick.
