Following a theme through your IATL Journey

Following a theme through your IATL journey

IATL modules offer students a taste of an alternative higher education where creativity, critical thinking, and wellbeing are at the centre of the learning experience. Our seminars and workshops draw connections between various ideas, experiences and practices, allowing you to develop a style of interdisciplinary thinking highly valued by students and employers alike.

Our students are encouraged to lead their own learning with independent research, and often have the flexibility to disseminate their work through a variety of ‘student devised assessment’ methods.

By taking an IATL module, you are not merely learning about the world, you are working with partners from different disciplines to develop new ways of understanding it.

In order to help you understand the theme of our portfolio of modules, they have been grouped into three general categories: Mind, Body, and Culture, Applying Innovation and Creating Change. However, these are not fixed and many of our modules overlap or permeate into more than one category.

All IATL modules foster ‘interdisciplinary thinking’, that is, a way of thinking that directs attention to the whole of a problem not just to its part, fostering broad mindedness, problem solving and creativity, in addition to other characteristics skills such as collaboration, reflection, critical thinking and dealing with uncertainty.

Are you interested in a holistic exploration of the mind and body, and how it influences and is influenced by wider cultures?

Working across intersecting themes and disciplines, these modules delve into the question of what it means to be human.

You will apply interdisciplinary knowledge about human health and society to many of the big challenges facing us today, and you will develop your ideas for action as part of your assessment.

Would you like to apply your creative thinking in the face of contemporary challenges?

Join the vibrant community of IATL students interested in innovation in interdisciplinary areas of practice such as entrepreneurship, design thinking, or digital futures.

All modules in this category have practical, creative, and tangible assessment outcomes, such as designing your own boardgame, engaging with the local community, or creating a podcast.

Can you imagine a different world than the one we are currently living in? What would your imagined society look like? What ideas and resources do we need to lead such change?

Modules in this category invite you to explore these questions, critically reflect on your answers, and act on them in practice via your ‘student devised assessments’, reflective portfolios, or live engagement activities.
