Provision of Training
In the first year, I will take responsibility for your technical training with support from members of the lab or collaborators, where relevant. With time, you will be encouraged towards seeking out more advanced training independently or following discussion of your requirements.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I will expect you to take full ownership of your progression supported by weekly meetings during your first year. With increasing independence these meetings might reduce depending on progress and personal requirement, but my door always remains open for support, and I like to be informed on new developments.
Communication
I maintain an open-door policy, allowing people to drop by for additional discussions when needed. Further, we run weekly group meetings where everyone finds an open audience to present their work, discuss project progress and future directions.
I might email my team/PhD students outside of regular working hours, however I do not expect you to do the same.
The team has a WhatsApp group chat with which we regularly communicate during the week and weekend. Whilst I expect you to keep up with my/team communications, I will expect you to maintain a healthy work/life balance or otherwise come and discuss any issues openly with me.
Meetings
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per week. These meetings will be face-to-face. I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.
Work Patterns
The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 1 week's notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
