Undergraduate Summer Intern Success at ISBI
We are delighted to share that the work of Seth Chang (3rd year Data Science) and Muhammad Amjad (4th year Maths and Physics), who completed an eight-week summer internship at the TIA Centre in 2025, has been accepted as a paper at ISBI 2026, a leading international conference on biomedical imaging, taking place in London this April.

Their paper, “Synergy vs. Noise: Performance-Guided Multimodal Fusion For Biochemical Recurrence-Free Survival in Prostate Cancer”, supervised by Dr Adam Shephard and Prof Nasir Rajpoot, explores how different data types, including pathology, radiology, and clinical data, perform individually and in combination for predicting recurrence. The study shows that combining strong modalities (like clinical data and histopathology) improves prediction, while adding weaker ones (such as radiology) can actually reduce performance. This likely reflects the limited ability of preoperative MRI to capture microscopic disease and cellular-level aggressiveness, which histopathology reveals and which ultimately drives recurrence.
It’s amazing what undergraduate students can achieve on these projects. We’re proud to give them the chance to experience the full research cycle, from hands-on coding and experimentation to presenting at an international conference. Attending ISBI will give Seth and Muhammad a real taste of academia and is a well-deserved reward for their hard work.
Congratulations to Seth and Muhammad on this outstanding achievement! We wish them the best as they present their work in April.
