Bumper News

Hi All,

Given I've been away for 2-weeks, and then not posted the news to this feed last week -- this week's news is a bumper edition. Lots of things to report:

1) In some great news, I'm happy to report that Sam Moore will be moving to a Lectureship in Lancaster from November. Sam's work on vaccination during the COVID outbreak has been superb, with massive impact - helping to set UK policy. He will be greatly missed, but I hope many of us will keep collaborating.
2) Other terrific news is that Robin Thompson is now a Dad. His daughter Lily was born on 30th July - massive congratulations to Robin & Rebecca.
3) We are planning to re-start SBIDER seminars on Mondays at 2-3pm, when term begins. Suki has already booked us a room in the Oculus, and there is space for lunch beforehand (1-2). For this coming term, we thought it would be easier to pick from the wealth of researchers in Warwick - probably alternating between SBIDER and non-SBIDER people. Please can you either
(i) send me & Suki suggestions for non-SBIDER talks (person's name & email and even subject area would be good) and volunteers from SBIDER; or
4) Erin reports that Tino Pori, one of her phd students, has just received a grant from the Medical and Life Sciences research fund for "Rift Valley fever virus at a wildlife-livestock interface: what role do African buffalo play in virus circulation?". He will start trapping mosquitoes and testing cattle and wildlife for infection starting this winter.
5) Not content with one bit of good news, Robin has also just won his first main PI grant. The funding is from the Wellcome Trust for "The impact of climate variability on infectious disease epidemic risks", which will employ a PDRA from January 2023 -- talk to Robin or Matt if you know someone with strong computer skills that might be interested.
6) The latest SBIDER Careers Podcast has just been released. Ed & Laura chatted with Suki - really informative and entertaining:

7) There has been a bumper crop of papers while I've been away (2 from me, 2 from Robin and 3 from Xavier!):

    Weekly News

    Hi,

Four short things to report this week.

    1) Ed & Laura have made a new podcast, talking to Samik Datta (who was in SBIDER until 2017) about his move to NewZealand and working for the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

    2) Sascha and the Bioinformatics RTP has finalised a 2-year contract with the PATH-SAFE project, funding further developments of the EnteroBase system at 2.25 FTEs. EnteroBase was originally developed by the lab of Prof. Mark Achtman but is now hosted by the RTP. PATH-SAFE stands for The Pathogen Surveillance in Agriculture, Food and Environment (PATH-SAFE) programme and is a £19.2m Shared Outcomes Fund (SOF) research programme which aims
to develop a national surveillance network, using the latest DNA-sequencing technology and environmental sampling to improve the detection, and tracking of foodborne human pathogens and AMR through the whole agri-food system from farm-to-fork.

    3) Given more people are moving back to the office - Nigel was suggesting that we re-start the seminar series. Volunteers to help, especially from ECR would be most welcome.

    4) Only one paper out this week:

Geerts, M; Van Reet, N; Leyten, S; Berghmans, R; Rock, KS; Coetzer, THT; Eyssen, LEA; Buscher, P (2022) Trypanosoma brucei gambiense-iELISA: A Promising New Test for the Post-Elimination Monitoring of Human African Trypanosomiasis. CLINICAL INFECTIOUS DISEASES 73 E2477-E2483

    COVID: from theory to practice

    Hi All,

So after 2+ years working on the COVID-19 pandemic, and a long time spent avoiding all risky situations - I've been hit with COVID this week. So this is news from isolation.

    A few things to report:

    1) Nigel brought cakes in on Tuesday 5th to try to tempt people back to the office. Hopefully we can try to keep Tuesdays as a regular slot where as many of us as possible are around to chat.

    2) Ed & Laura have done another fabulous podcast with Bridget (https://sbiderpresents.podbean.com/e/sbider-presents-episode-2/) expect more over the coming weeks - and please voluneer if you have some research you'd like to share with the world.

    3) Bridget would also like to remind everyone that there is only 4 days left to apply for a PDRA working with her on the evolution of infectious diseases in realistically-immunogenetically-diverse human populations.

    4) I know that Ed & Laura have been at the Health GRP Early Career Researcher Workshop - you'll have to ask them if it was successful / interesting.

    5) Finally, in terms of recent publications:
