Investigating strategies for mechanical ventilation in COVID-19 via computational simulation of virtual patients
Prof. Declan Bates
We propose adapting a state-of-the-art computational simulator, which has been developed to investigate mechanical ventilation in ARDS [3-4], to investigate a range of issues that are specific to mechanical ventilation of COVID-19 patients.

Integrating data-driven biophysical models into respiratory medicine - BIOREME
Prof. Declan Bates
Lung diseases such as Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease affect one in five people in the UK and kill someone every 5 minutes. The number of patients with these lung diseases was increasing in the NHS even before COVID-19. We are also learning about serious long-term effects of COVID-19 that will add to the existing burden on the NHS.

A sensorimoto PROsthesis for the upper LIMB (PROLIMB)
Prof. Michael Chappell/ Dr Neil Evans
The finger and fingertip are the most frequently amputated body parts, due to work-related incidents. Yet because of space, weight and cost constraints, prosthetic fingers and fingertips are heavy and bulky with limited active motion and sensation. The aim of this project is to model, design, fabricate and validate an affordable body-powered prosthetic fingertip digit with integrated mechanical haptic feedback.
