Morgan Advanced Materials is a global manufacturing business producing a broad range of components from ceramic materials. Founded in 1856 manufacturing crucibles for metal processing, we have continued to develop cutting edge grades of ceramics and carbon for use in some of the most challenging environments. These components find uses in a diverse range of applications from aerospace engines, medical devices, laser systems to industrial pumps.

Morgan’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Structural Ceramics was founded in 2015 as a hub to concentrate materials science expertise to develop solutions for several global business units within Morgan. As an interface between the business, customers and academia we work on projects aligned to Morgan’s strategy delivering value to our customers. Whilst numerical modelling is not a new tool of the business, the CoE has certainly increased its area of application.

It is widespread opinion that numerical modelling in the academic world is different from industry. In this talk the speaker, who recently transitioned between the two paradigms, discusses some of the differences. After an introduction to the company, the overall vision and skills required to set-up a simulation project within a corporate manufacturing environment will be discussed. This includes considerations on how the requirements change depending on which part of the business the simulation is going to support. Lastly, an overview will be given of some of the current numerical models employed in Morgan and a perspective for future applications.
