Inspiring the Next Generation of AI Researchers: AI Winter School
The Winter School aimed to demystify the PhD experience, reduce barriers to doctoral study, and provide early-career researchers with a supportive environment to deepen their understanding of AI methodologies. The programme was made possible thanks to the generous support of EPSRC.
The opening day, hosted by HetSys CDT, was led by Zahra Bhatti and YC Wong, with Minerva Schuler contributing to the preparation of teaching materials. Professor James Kermode, CDT Director, provided academic oversight.
The day offered a structured introduction to core AI and machine-learning concepts. Sessions were delivered by current PhD students, Innovation Research Associates, and academic staff using AI in their research. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises and open discussions about the role of AI in scientific discovery and computational modelling.
Throughout the week, attendees had the opportunity to learn from researchers, technical specialists, and AI-driven startups, gaining insight into the applications of AI in both academia and industry.
The AI Winter School represents Warwick’s commitment to broadening access to doctoral study and nurturing future research leaders.
