HetSys Students Attend Isaac Newton Institute Workshop on Science Communication and Industry Engagement
The workshop took place in January 2026 and brought together participants from across the UK to engage in an intensive programme of training and discussion. This follows the highly successful pilot event held in February 2025, which welcomed 35 doctoral students from universities nationwide.
Over the course of the week, students took part in sessions covering:
- Effective science communication for academic and non‑academic audiences
- Responsible research conduct, ethics, and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)
- Building partnerships with industry and understanding routes to knowledge exchange
- Professional networking with peers and international academic visitors
- Peer‑support mechanisms and community-building within research cohorts
The workshop’s varied programme created an environment that encouraged open discussion, practical skill-building, and sustained engagement with experts from academia, industry, and the public sector.
Participation in the INI workshop represents a significant professional development opportunity for HetSys students. By engaging with national-level training and interacting with peers from across the UK, attendees gain valuable insight into how their research interfaces with industry, society, and global academic networks.
This initiative also reflects HetSys’ commitment to preparing its students not only as strong researchers but also as responsible and well-rounded contributors to the wider scientific community.
The CDT congratulates George, Luca, and Rumesh on their participation and looks forward to supporting further involvement in future INI training programmes.
