EPSRC Leadership Visits HetSys CDT to Engage with PhD Researchers

This visit provided a valuable opportunity to highlight the pioneering interdisciplinary research being undertaken by our PhD students, made possible through the ongoing support of EPSRC. Despite a packed schedule, Professor Deane and Mr Rowe took the time to engage directly with students at various career stages, gaining meaningful insight into the breadth and depth of innovation within HetSys.

A particular highlight of the day was a showcase of student research, where our PhD candidates presented their cutting-edge work across diverse areas of computational science:

  • Oscar Holroyd (Cohort 3): Controlling nonlinear fluid films through hierarchical modelling
  • Jacob Eller (Cohort 4): Machine learning approaches to UV-filter efficiency and photoprotection
  • Arielle Fitkin (Cohort 4): Simulations guiding metal deposition for next-generation photovoltaics
  • Valdas Virtartas (Cohort 5): Machine-learned quantum models for energy transport simulations
  • Hubert Naguszewski (Cohort 4): Investigating memory effects in rare event kinetics

We are deeply grateful to all involved for helping make the visit such a success. Special thanks to EPSRC for their continued commitment to supporting early-career researchers and for engaging so closely with the HetSys community. We look forward to building on this momentum as we continue to foster a thriving, collaborative environment for world-class research in computational science.
