CECAM workshop: Fulfilling the Multiscale Promise in Materials - 31 Mar - 3 Apr

The workshop was attended by Geraldine Anis (Cohort 3), Livia Bartok Partay (HetSys deputy director), Vincent Fletcher (Cohort 4) and Lakshmi Shenoy (Cohort 2, now a postdoc at the University of Sheffield) giving excellent talks which were very well received and generated lots of discussion, and Chantal Baer and Fraser Birks (both Cohort 4) presenting in the vibrant poster session. The HetSys students also engaged actively in the discussions after the talks, demonstrating critical engagement with the field.

The event was organised by James Kermode (HetSys director), Erik Bitzek (Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials) Gianpietro Moras (Fraunhofer IWM, a HetSys partner), Lars Pastewka (U. Freiburg and CompNano doctoral training centre, also a HetSys partner) and Céline Varvenne (CNRS). It included an opening session dedicated to Sandro De Vita, who played a key role in nucleating the incorporation of electronic structure methods within the interdisciplinary multiscale materials modelling community, and in nurturing it subsequently. The workshop surveyed the progress made in this area since Sandro sadly passed away in 2018 and also identified future challenges requiring concerted collective action - which HetSys students are very well placed to help tackle.
