HetSys Hosts Fellowship Workshop

The workshop was led by:

  • Christopher Woodgate (Cohort 1)
  • Tom Rocke (Cohort 3)
  • Matt Nutter (Cohort 3)

All speakers shared their personal experiences of navigating the fellowship landscape, from the early stages of shaping a research vision to the pressures of interview panels and the practical realities of holding a fellowship.

Across a series of informal talks and Q&A discussions, students gained valuable insight into topics including:

  • How to identify suitable fellowship schemes
  • Strategies for preparing a strong application
  • Common pitfalls and challenges encountered during selection
  • The long‑term value of fellowships in shaping academic and research careers

The workshop saw excellent attendance, with students from multiple cohorts taking part. Many commented on the value of hearing candid reflections from people who have recently been through the process, particularly the practical advice on timelines, proposal development, and managing feedback.
