Physics Theory Group Seminar - Friday 24 May

This week's Physics Theory Group Seminar will take place at 2pm in PS1.28. There will be no lunch beforehand, but there will be tea, coffee, and cakes available in the common room following the seminar. We have the pleasure of welcoming Prof. David Manolopoulos from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford. A title and abstract are below.

Title:

Spin dynamics in radical pairs

Abstract:

Radical (and polaron) pair recombination reactions play a role a wide variety of problems, ranging from why the electroluminescence of organic light emitting diodes changes in the presence of an applied magnetic field to how migratory songbirds detect the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. The quantum mechanical Hamiltonian of a radical pair is straightforward to write down, but the resulting Schrödinger equation is extremely difficult to solve exactly for a radical pair containing a realistic number of hyperfine-coupled nuclear spins. We have developed both semiclassical and quantum mechanical methods to overcome this difficulty, derived the quantum master equations that account for radical pair recombination and electron spin relaxation processes, and performed a variety of benchmark radical pair spin dynamics calculations, including a recent exact quantum mechanical calculation of the spin dynamics of a carotenoid-porphyrin-fullerene molecule that the Hore and Timmel groups have shown to provide a "proof of principle" for the operation of a chemical compass. This talk will review some of the highlights of our work in this area, starting with the problem that first motivated us to work on radical pairs and ending with a demonstration that it has now been solved.

The Piscopia Initiative – creating a community of women and non-binary researchers in Mathematics

Piscopia is an organisation encouraging women and non-binary people to pursue PhDs in mathematics. The local Warwick committee are looking to recruit new members to help organise events. This is a small commitment, with roughly one event every term. The events are aimed at female and non-binary undergraduates, to share information about the PhD experience. The plan for this term is to run a coffee morning with current PhD students and undergraduates, where we can chat with the undergraduates about their mathematical interests and potential PhD plans.

If you are interested in joining please contact Patience Ablett at patience.ablett@warwick.ac.uk. For more information see https://piscopia.co.uk/.
