Information about Internships
Thinking about doing an internship during your HetSys PhD? This page explains the process, key contacts, and what you need to do depending on whether your internship is integral or incidental to your programme of study.
1. Speak with your supervisor
Before applying for an internship, it is important to speak with your supervisor to ensure that this opportunity is right for you, following approval from your supervisor, please read through the below steps and speak with the HetSys admin team for further support.
2.
Let the admin team know that you will be applying for an internship. Complete this form with the details so that the admin team are aware of your decision, include as much information as possible including how the internship will be funded.
3.
Let us know if your application has been successful - if successful then continue with the steps below.
2. Is your Internship Integral or Incidental?
The next step is to read through this link and consider whether your internship is Intergral or Incidental. You can find out more here.
Integral Internships do not require a TWD as they are a part of your programme. Incidenetal Internships are considered to be seperate from your programme of student and a TWD is therefore required.RTSG Allowance:
- Please note that during a TWD absence, you will not be able to access your RTSG allowance. Should you be planning to attend any conferences/workshops/or purchase equipment during this time then please come and speak with me so that we can explore alternative options for you.
2. Temporary Withdrawal (TWD) Process
If you’re successful in your internship application, and your internship is incidental, then you will need to complete a temporary withdrawal request, more details on how to raise this can be found here
Please do refer this link should you need any further information about TWDs: https://warwick.ac.uk/services/academicoffice/studentrecords/twd/.
- Once submitted, your TWD request will come through to Sarah and I and we will then approve this.
- Following approval, you will receive a formal email from the Student Records Team confirming your TWD period, they will also outline instructions on how to re-enrol.
-
Formal Study during your TWD:
- The other thing to note is that students deemed to be temporarily withdrawnmust notundertake any formal study for the period of the temporary withdrawal and must cease to receive instruction from their Department. However, students will retain their IT access and library access and borrowing rights during a period of temporary withdrawal. Students may, of course, choose to undertake relevant reading during a period of temporary withdrawal but this is a decision for the individual to make and cannot be a requirement.
UKRI Records
- We will notify EPSRC of your TWD and we will update your new end funding end date and submission date in the UKRI student portal so there will be nothing for you to action here. We will send confirmation once this has been completed.
