Title: Computational Methods for Enhancing Power System Resilience to Cyber Attacks
Speaker: Subhash Lakshminarayana

Abstract: Power grids are undergoing a fundamental transformation to achieve net-zero targets. Traditionally centralised and closed systems are now opening to diverse actors, such as distributed energy resources (solar, wind, etc.) and demand-side flexibility aggregators (EV charging, etc.). The penetration of these “smart” technologies, with their connectivity features, is improving system efficiency but also introduces cybersecurity risks that could lead to catastrophic consequences. Developing a cyber-resilient power grid is more important than ever, ensuring that systems can maintain acceptable performance and recover when faced with adverse events. In this talk, I will highlight the computational tools used in my research for developing a cyber-resilient power grid by visiting the three stages of resilience assessment. I will highlight (i) advanced sampling methods for attack impact and risk analysis, (ii) physics-informed machine learning for attack detection/localisation, (iii) distributionally robust optimisation for real-time attack mitigation.

Bio:Dr. Subhash Lakshminarayana is an Associate Professor in the University of Warwick's School of Engineering since September 2018. Prior to joining Warwick, he held researcher appointments at Illinois at SingaporeLink opens in a new window
