Consultant obstetric presence 24/7 is recommended by the RCOG, but has not be widely implemented. In 2018, our colleagues in a local NHS maternity unit approached us to develop research to explore the effect of introducing 24/7 resident labour ward consultant presence in their maternity unit. Through this collaboration we developed a retrospective time sequence analysis of routinely collected NHS data. We examined whether full-time consultant obstetrician presence on the labour ward was associated with improved outcomes for babies. The findings are currently under review with a leading obstetric journal.
