The images below illustrate striking similarities in the evolution of quasi two dimensional plasma turbulence simulation and in the granular segregation in the driven binary monoleyers.

Top sequence of images shows the evolution of the pattern for the glass spheres(cyan)/phosphor-bronze spheres(yellow) mixture (85% of the tray covered with particles), vibrated from left to right at frequency of 12 Hz and amplitude ±0.6 mm in the (90 × 90) mm2. Images provided by Tom Mullin and Draga Pihler-Puzovic from the University of Manchester.

Bottom sequence of images shows the development of electrostatic plasma potential in quasi two dimensional turbulence simulation based on Hasegawa-Wakatani equations with zonal averaging. The system becomes turbulent and, after a secondary instability has been triggered, evolves toward a zonal flow pattern with flow arranged in the bands of the opposite polarity. Images from J. Dewhurst, B Hnat, R. O. Dendy, Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 52 025004 (2010).
