Position: PhD Student (part-time) Supervisor: Dr Tony Arber Project Title: Inertial Confinement Fusion & Laser Plasma Interactions Brief description of project: The latest generation of high power lasers is aiming at achieving a fusion detonation by imploding a pellet of deuterium and tritium. For this to work as much as possible of the laser energy must be absorbed by the plasma which is generated. Experiments suggest that the level of laser energy reflected from the ambient plasma is small enough for ignition to be achieved. However, there is an incomplete theoretical understanding of why the reflectivity is so low. This project aims to elucidate the underlying physics of laser backscatter/reflection by performing direct numerical simulations of the relativistic interaction of intense lasers with plasma. This project involves knowledge of laser-plasma physics, fusion research and high performance computing.
