Augmented Reality Musical Ensemble
The ARME Project
The ARME Project (https://arme-project.co.uk) is a collaboration between WMG, the University of Birmingham, BCU, and a number of industrial partners to build a practice tool for solo musicians to play with simulated AI players forming the rest of an ensemble. This involves a range of exciting technologies including automatic onset detection, mathematical modelling and parameter estimation, motion capture, and augmented reality. As one of our interns, you'll be working on a specific area to support this awesome project, and will get a range of potentially multidisciplinary experience on a high-profile research project.
Research Group Activity
The Institute of Digital Healthcare aims to improve people’s health and wellbeing through the use of innovative digital technologies. We work closely with healthcare companies, technology start-ups and the NHS to deliver applied research and development in the area of digital health.
Dr Elliott is based in IDH and his research group is interested in movement analytics. This involves the use of technology to accurately measure, monitor and model movement and activity, primarily for healthcare related applications. Dr Goodman is also based in IDH (in Dr Elliott's research group), and his research is currently around mathematical modelling (and motion capture) - with a particular focus on musical and psychological concepts and phenomena.
Project Description
You'll have the opportunity to work on an area of interest in the project that's relevant and exciting to you. These may include:
- Mathematical modelling of human timing & coordination
- Motion capture methods and mapping into VR/AR environments
- Music related behavioural experiments (subject to ethical approvals)
We're also open to suggested related project areas.
Required Skills
The ideal candidate will have experience with data analysis, simulation in a language of their choice (ideally MATLAB due to preexisting code), and a good grounding in mathematics. In addition, a working knowledge of music theory and music would be useful, but is not essential.
