Dr Ayten Alibaba

I am a post-doctoral researcher deeply fascinated by the complex interplays at the intersection of sociolinguistics, migration studies, and intercultural communication. My research adopts an interdisciplinary approach, focusing on themes such as identity, othering and (un)belonging, understandings of space and place, linguistic landscapes and the politics of belonging.
Currently, I am employed as a research assistant to Prof Jo Angouri, where I contribute to advancing research in the internationalisation of higher education, transnational education, and multilingualism.
My passion lies in unravelling the nuanced ways in which language and culture influence human connections and societal structures across global landscapes.

Research Interests πŸ”

My academic journey has been driven by a relentless curiosity about the intersections of communication and culture.

One of my key passions lies in unraveling the intricate relationship between language and ideology. I am deeply intrigued by the ways in which language becomes a vessel for the transmission of beliefs, values, and power dynamics within societies. Through my research, I've unveiled the subtle yet powerful manifestations of ideology in everyday language use, uncovering the hidden layers of social structures and power imbalances.

Bridging Spaces, Connecting Cultures 🌐

My fascination with space and place has led me to explore how physical and virtual environments influence communication practices and intercultural dynamics. By studying the interplay between locations, cultural contexts, and communication patterns, I aim to shed light on the complex ways in which people create meaning within their environments and across cultural boundaries.

Migration Matters πŸ—ΊοΈ

Migration is a pivotal force shaping our world, and I'm dedicated to understanding its impact on communication and identity. My studies in diaspora studies have equipped me with insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by individuals as they navigate linguistic and cultural transitions. By examining the narratives of migrants and the communities they claim belonging for, I seek to contribute to the development of inclusive and diverse societies.

Lifelong Learner & Collaborator πŸ“š

I am committed to continual learning and growth, eager to stay at the forefront of emerging theories and methodologies. Collaboration is at the heart of my approach – I believe that by engaging with diverse perspectives, we can enrich our understanding of complex sociocultural phenomena.
