Research Interests

Some of my interests include foreign language teacher education, methodology for English language teaching, action research for foreign language teachers, using literature/drama in TESOL, language teacher identity, intercultural communication, intercultural learning and intercultural identity

Current Research

I was a research project member for the ViLTE project which has explored uses of video in language teacher education. Biography

I grew up in England but have lived and worked abroad for extended periods in the USA and Japan.

My academic background is both in literature and in English language teaching, particularly English for Academic Purposes. I have a BA and MA in English Literature as well as an MA in Applied Linguistics/TESOL. My MA dissertation focused on how minority/diaspora literature can aid in the preparation of international students for study abroad experiences.

I have taught English Literature and ESL/EFL/EAP courses at universities in the USA, Japan and England.

Currently I am an Assistant Professor (Teaching Focussed) in the Department of Applied Linguistics, and I also serve as MA TESOL Admissions Tutor and MA TESOL Course Leader. I teach across the MA and MSc programmes, and in the past I have contributed to the BA programme as well as the Insessional academic English program and Short Course programs run by the department. I am the module leader for the MA TESOL module 'Foundations of TESOL Methodology' in Term 1 and 'Foundations of TESOL Professional Practice' in Term 2. I am module leader for the core term 1 MSc module 'Culture, Identity and Adaptation'. I have also been module leader for the MSc ICBP option module 'Teaching Language and Culture' which has run in Term 2 (currently not running).

Other postgraduate modules I teach on include:

  • MA TESOL : Specialism in Drama & Literature for TESOL
    Over the years I have also been involved in (online) materials development and e-learning initiatives within the department.
