Director of Short Courses
 

Jonathan French - Director of Short Courses

Jonathan is the Director of Short Courses who can draw upon extensive educator experience in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) sector as a teacher, director of studies and CELTA teacher-trainer with International House. His work at the Department of Applied Linguistics involves negotiating and creating bespoke English language and professional development courses for institutions, including universities, ministries of education and corporate bodies from around the world.

Penny Mosavian- Assistant Professor & Director of Studies

Penny is responsible for the design, development, teaching and evaluation of a range of bespoke short course programmes offered by the Department, and has a special interest and expertise in teacher training and professional development. Her other areas of interest include educational leadership and strategic management, curriculum management and managing resources.

Miriam Schwiening - Assistant Professor & Director of Studies

Miriam has been teaching EAP and English language for 25 years and has been working at the University of Warwick since 2017, teaching EAP to post-graduate and foundation students. She has worked as a main course tutor for Cambridge English, leading on CELTA courses since 2012. Her academic interests include internationalisation of the curriculum, with a particular focus on collaboration between EAP practitioners and discipline lecturers in course design and teaching.

Schwiening, Miriam

Lynnette Richards - Assistant Professor 

Lynnette has been involved in ELT for 35 years, teaching and directing a wide range of courses at language schools, FE colleges and UK universities. She currently teaches and supervises students on the Masters in TESOL and Intercultural Communication, and is also involved in writing and teaching on sessional and short courses. She is a CELTA teacher-trainer and is interested in practitioner research. Her other research interests include intercultural pragmatics and teaching EAP.

Daniel Jones - Assistant Professor & Director of Studies

Daniel works on short courses for English for Academic Purposes, teacher development for English language and English for Academic Purposes teachers, and teacher development for English Medium Instruction contexts. Before joining Warwick, he worked for 14 years at the Centre for International Training and Education at the University of Leicester, where he took on various programme director roles for pre-sessional EAP, in sessional EAP, credit-bearing modules for Study Abroad students, and most recently Teacher Development Programmes.

Katie Barlow - Operations Administrator

Katie has worked at the University of Warwick since 2008, initially beginning within Undergraduate Admissions before moving to Widening Participation to manage the Events and Operations Team, including oversight of internal and external communication strategies and event and stakeholder management. She volunteered as a Resident Tutor living in the student accommodation to provide pastoral support and worked on the Pre-sessional English course as a Lead Residential Assistant before joining the Applied Linguistics Department in May 2022. Her role is to oversee the Short Course Programmes operation and to manage the team who support this.

Katie Barlow

Sara Pestell - International Student and Accommodation Support Officer

Sara has worked at DAL as an International Student Support Officer within Short Courses for the past six years. She has many years’ experience of working within Higher Education and Further Education settings where she has supported students with wellbeing support and careers advice. She also worked for a charity that recruited English teachers to work overseas and has spent time in China contributing to induction programmes.

Kate Cooper - Short Courses Coordinator

Kate joined the Department for Applied Linguistics in 2018. Before joining the short courses team, Kate worked for the award bearing team, providing support to the Undergraduate programmes of study. Kate holds a joint honours degree in German and Politics and has a variety of experience in the education sector. She has most notably worked for Cambridge Assessment and the Institute of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge. Kate has experience in administration, student support and marketing.
