Your first few weeks of term
Welcome to the School of Education, Learning and Communication Sciences (SELCS)!
We’re delighted to have you join our research community and look forward to supporting you on your journey.
If you’ve met the conditions of your offer, the enrolment process is now open - see the University’s Enrolment webpages for details, or contact the Student Visa Advice Service with any queries. If you haven’t yet accepted your offer, you can respond via the Application Portal.
To help you settle in, we’ve planned a series of Welcome Week and induction events to introduce you to key people, spaces and resources, and to connect you with fellow researchers.
Monday 29 September
Welcome Education Studies
10.45am - 1.45pm, L3 (Science Concourse)
You will receive a very warm welcome at this Welcome to Education Studies session. This is your first opportunity to meet key staff in the Centre, to start to get to know other students, and to find out what to expect from Welcome Week and the start of your course.

SELCS Social Event
2pm - 3pm, Panorama Suite (Rootes Building)
Join us for an informal social event, where you’ll have the chance to meet fellow new students from across the School as you begin your PhD journey.
Thursday 2 October
Welcome to your PGR studies in SELCS
10am - 12pm, S2.77 (Social Sciences building)
Meet other new PGRs and key staff, share experiences, and explore the many ways to thrive during your research degree. We’ll also signpost key resources and platforms.
Lunch and mini tour of campus
12pm - 1pm, S2.77 (Social Sciences building)

PGR study in Applied Linguistics/Education Studies/Centre for Lifelong Learning
1pm - 2pm, S2.77 (Social Sciences building)
Each centre will host a short session to introduce their approach to research and study.
Q&A panel session with current PGRs
2pm - 3pm, S2.77 (Social Sciences building)
Hear from current students about their experiences and ask questions in an open discussion.
Wednesday 8 October
Introduction to the Library
3:30pm-5pm in the Creative Community Space, on Floor 2 of the Library.
Led by Christine Bradford from the Library, this session will help you navigate resources and tools available to researchers.
Wednesday 15 October
Getting the Most Out of Supervision
2pm - 5pm, S0.09 (Social Sciences building)
A session to explore how to work effectively with your supervisors in order to get the most out of your PGR experience.
Wednesday 22 October
Engaging with Literature
2pm - 5pm, S0.09 (Social Sciences building)
A session to get together and explore the start of your PGR programmes and your initial engagement with the literature in your field. Discussions will also focus on approaches to reading and synthesising the literature, challenges and opportunities relating to this.
