The unfinished challenge of equality in South African higher education: an intersectional analysis from a capability perspective
Dr Talita Calitz will be joining CES on an IAS Residential Fellowship in the week 19th - 25th June 2016, as a result of ongoing collaboration with Dr Emily Henderson (CES).
Dr Talita Calitz is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CRHED (Centre for Research on Higher Education and Development), University of the Free State, South Africa. She is involved in a number of funded research projects related to equality, human development and social justice in higher education. She completed her PhD in CRHED in 2015, having been awarded a full-time Doctoral Scholarship. The focus of her doctoral research was on the experiences of socio-economically vulnerable undergraduate students in South Africa. Her thesis proposes a capabilities-informed praxis that expands students’ freedom to achieve equal participation. Talita’s future research aims to operationalize a critical human development approach to the intersectional marginalities of race, class and gender at higher education institutions.
During her visit, Talita Calitz will present a CES Research Seminar, co-hosted by the International Development GRP, and supported by the Faculty of Social Sciences. The seminar title is ‘The unfinished challenge of equality in South African higher education: an intersectional analysis from a capability perspective’. Tuesday 21st June 2016, 12:30-1pm light lunch, 1-2:30 seminar and discussion; Room C1.11 (CES, Social Sciences Building).
