IE932 11 - 12

The Learning and Information and Communications Technology module offers an exploration of the role new technologies might play in teaching and learning. It raises the question ‘what can ICT contribute and how we should assess that contribution?’ For example should we see new technology as a support for teaching and learning as presently conceived or as a means of driving change and innovation within the curriculum. The use of new technology cannot be divorced from the expectations of users in particular the pedagogy of the teacher. This module will:

  • introduce you to some of the more widely used applications of new technology in the curriculum
  • help you consider the use of new technology in relation to wider theories of learning, implicit or ‘folk’ theories as well as more systematic learning theory
  • introduce you to some of the key debates covering new technology in school in its short history.

The sessions are designed to be participative and to mix hands on work with discussion and presentations. There is a course blog to support discussion between sessions. The course guide is linked here. This course will be organised around ten seminars in the CeNTRE multi media room. The sessions are indicative only and I will be happy to amend sessions to meet the interests of the group.

Assignment

This is a 30 CATs module. The assignment takes the form of a 5,000 word essay about the use of new technology to support / change an aspect of teaching and learning in or beyond the classroom. This will be negotiated with each student early on in the course and you will be encouraged to read and to present your ideas on your chosen topic. You are encouraged to build a practical component into your assignment for example trying out a new approach to teaching or a new piece of software with learners or collecting data on your colleagues use of new technologies. However this may not be practical for some.

Guidance on writing for academic purposes can be found at: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/wie/teaching/support/studyskills/postgrad/masters/

Help with other aspects of Study Skills is available on the WIE Study Skills website www.go.warwick.ac.uk/wie-studyskills. This gives access to an e-learning ‘toolkit’ which covers many aspects of study skills
