Leadership Group Team Members

  • Ian Abbott is currently the Director of Centre For Education Studies, an Associate Professor and is the leader for the MA module, Policy, Strategy and Resources. He was formerly Deputy Director of the Institute of Education and is also course leader for the MA in Business and Enterprise. His research interests include 14-19 policy, education finance, and leadership in further education.
  • Justine Mercer   is an associate professor of educational leadersihp and course leader of the MA in Educational Leadership (Teach First). In an international career spanning more than 20 years, she worked as a teacher, teacher trainer, university lecturer, school inspector and Ministry of Education advisor in countries as diverse as Thailand, Turkey, Hungary, P.R. China, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Her research interests encompass human resource management, school sector industrial relations, HE leadership, and women’s studies.
  • David Middlewood, formerly a headteacher, has worked at three English universities and is also a visiting professor in New Zealand and South Africa. He co-ordinates Warwick’s Master’s programme in the Seychelles. His research activities include inclusive and extended schools, newly appointed school leaders, leadership teams, succession planning and specialist primary schools. He has been editor of two national practitioner journals.
  • Dr Robert Smith has previously worked as lecturer and researcher with the Open University and the University of Leicester. His principal research interests include leadership and management in Higher Education and the internationalisation of Higher Education. In addition, he has previously researched the impact of professional development on school leadership, succession planning and specialist primary schools.
  • Phil Whitehead is currently a Senior Teaching Fellow in The Centre for Education Studies. Since qualifying as a teacher in 1972 has worked in a variety of educational settings including secondary education, SEN, further and adult education and higher education. Was a headteacher for three years in Papua New Guinea and has experience of teaching and working in Abu Dhabi and Tanzania. Led two projects for the Staffordshire Lifelong Learning Network focused on Vocational Qualifications in Europe and Ethnicity and Entry to HE.
