Hundertwasser Relief Tiles

To create a foil relief tile inspired by the work of Hundertwasser

Year 9

This project focused on introducing students to relief sculpture techniques using accessible materials such as cardboard, string, and foil. Students were introduced to the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, gaining a strong understanding of his unique artistic style and developing the ability to critique his work thoughtfully.

Over the course of four lessons, students began by designing a tile in the style of Hundertwasser, incorporating bold lines, organic shapes, and patterns. In following lessons, they built their relief tile by attaching string to their cardboard base.

Once the relief was complete, students wrapped their tiles in foil, creating a metallic surface that was then coloured with sharpies. During this phase, students deepened their understanding of colour theory and practised blending different colours together.

“It was great to see students excited about designing their tiles. Many of them really enjoyed applying the string to create their reliefs and now have a clear understanding of what a sculptural relief is.”
