Pic Collage

Pic Collage is an app (freely available for both Apple and Android devices) that enables you to create collages using photos from your device, Facebook or Google Photos. You can then share the collages via a variety of options including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Gmail. Pic Collage does have other functionality such as the ability to create cards, but we will not be discussing this here. We have used an Android device to create these instructions.

How to create a formal collage

Open Pic Collage and tap the pink Grids button.

Pic Collage interface

You will be presented with your available images. In this example we are using photos on the device (the Gallery tab) but you can choose images from Facebook or Google Photos instead by tapping the relevant tab at the top of the interface.

Image selection interface Pic Collage

Scroll through your images tapping each one that you want to include. They will be highlighted in green and a button will appear at the top right of the screen displaying the number of images you have selected (in this example it shows 7). If you want to remove an image simply tap it again and the green highlight will be removed. When you are happy with your selection click on the green numbered button at the top right of the interface.

You then need to choose the layout for your collage by scrolling through the options at the bottom of the page. You will see a preview of the layout when you tap a particular option. If you tap the 2:3 button at the bottom left of the interface you will scroll through different display widths. You can also choose a background colour/design for your collage by tapping the background button (the square with hatched lines on it to the left of the slider). The slider allows you to adjust how much or how little background you want to show on your collage.

If you decide you do not want to include an individual image you can tap and flick it to the top right of the screen to delete it; the collage will adjust accordingly. A dustbin icon will appear when you do this. You can also tap and drag images from one location on the collage to another. Once you are happy with your layout, tap the green check button to the bottom right of your collage.

You will now be asked to save or share your collage. The Save to Gallery button will save a local copy of the collage onto your device. If you want to share your collage more widely tap the appropriate option at the bottom of the screen and follow the instructions. If you save a local copy of your collage you will be able to edit it and make changes at a later date.

How to create a freestyle collage

The above instructions talk you through how to create a fairly formal collage but you can also create a looser, more informal collage by clicking on the Freestyle button instead of the Grids button. Neil Jarrett from Edtech gives a good account of how to do this with some nice examples on an iPad and this is available below:
