Research Seminar - Sahar Shah, PhD Candidate, University of Warwick Law SchoolRoom S2.12 Law School, Social Sciences BuildingTitle: “Company Raj” in Canada: The Hudson’s Bay Company and its Legal Offspring Abstract: Since its inception, the apparatus of the Canadian settler state has been deeply intertwined with the corporate legal form and commercial interests in “Canadian” natural resources. This seminar traces a continuity from the Hudson’s Bay Company’s “sovereignty” in early colonial Canada to the modern Canadian state’s relationship with corporate interest in the Athabascan tar sands. Ultimately, this continuity evinces an ongoing disconnect between the epistemologies and onto-epistemologies of the Canadian settler state and those of Indigenous groups. My research asks: can this disconnect be bridged within the Canadian legal system? If so, how? |
