WLS students share their experience of participating in Model WTO in Switzerland

Photo of Junwen at Model WTOWe are delighted to share the experiences of Fareedah Mustapha an International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation student and Junwen Zhong, an International Commercial Law student, who participated at the Model WTO in Geneva, Switzerland from 20 – 28 March 2024.

The Model WTO is the biggest simulation of the World Trade Organisation negotiations in the World. Their international conference provides a unique opportunity for future decision-makers to experience first-hand the technicalities of the multilateral trading system. Each year since 1997, students from around the world and different educational backgrounds have been invited to Switzerland to debate and exchange on the most relevant topics related to international Trade.

When asked about her experience, Junwen (top right) stated:

“MWTO is more of an eye-opening opportunity for young people who are determined to achieve their goals and values in today's increasingly complex international relations. It provides you with a platform to meet friends from around the world with different cultural backgrounds and academic disciplines. Through this platform, you have the chance to practice WTO procedural rules, talk with ambassadors and receive feedback from them. Additionally, by engaging in discussions with officials from UN, IMF and WTO, I gained a deeper understanding of global trade dynamics and the work of international organizations”.

"The conference proved to be both enlightening and captivating. Interacting with 54 individuals from 35 countries allowed me to gain insights into various cultures, prompting me to commit to learning French. My advice to fellow law students is to embrace opportunities for growth without hesitation. Always rise to challenges and aim to make a positive impact wherever you go. Don't shy away from expressing your ideas on problem-solving approaches, and remember to arm yourself with knowledge about the topics at hand at all times!"
