The report has been written by Mary-Ann Stephenson (Coventry Women’s Voices) with James Harrison and Ann Stewart from the School of Law, University of Warwick. This is the most comprehensive study of the impact of the spending cuts on older women. It follows up our report last year - Unravelling Equality: a human rights and equality impact assessment of the spending cuts on women in Coventry.

 

Come and find out what the cuts will mean for older women in Coventry.

 

The report looks at the impact of the public spending cuts on women in Coventry aged 50 and over. The findings of the report challenges the myth that older people have ‘got off lightly’ from the public sector spending cuts. This is flawed for two reasons:

 

• Cuts to public services, particularly social care, health and transport, will have a disproportionate and significant impact on older people and older women in particular.

• Significant numbers of older women are already living in poverty. The poorest older women are currently struggling to meet rising living costs particularly the costs of food and fuel which have risen faster than inflation. Cuts to their benefits and reduced support from public services and the voluntary sector will make this significantly harder.

 

The report highlights the actual and potential impact of the spending cuts on older women in Coventry in a five key areas:

 

• Health

• Social care

• Transport

• Incomes and poverty

• Employment

• Voluntary and advice services

 

What will the combined impact of these cuts mean for older women, particularly older women who are poor, disabled carers or BAME?
