The Warwick Global History and Culture Centre is hosting a reading group on the recent book, "They Called It Peace: World of Imperial Violence" by Lauren Benton (Princeton UP, 2024). The book exams how 'small wars', raiding, and violence short of war were fundamental to the formation of international law and international order during the early modern and modern era. Attendees are encouraged to read the Prologue, Chapter 1, and Chapter 4, which are available through the Warwick Library as an ebook. The discussion will be led by PAIS's Tom Long, and PAIS colleagues and students are welcome to join.
