‘Yuck: The Biological Weapons Taboo.’Online only29th April, 13.00, Online. Join us for a talk by Prof. Michelle Bentley, whose new book The Biological Weapons Taboo addresses what has been called the "great mystery of biological warfare": why states have consistently refrained from using biological weapons. Drawing on extensive archival research and a critical reading of US foreign policy, Bentley explores how disgust, stigma, and taboo have shaped both strategic decision-making and international norms. In this talk, she will unpack how these powerful cultural sentiments have constrained state behaviour, shaped treaty commitments, and redefined what it means to act 'legitimately' in war. In rethinking the very concept of taboo, Bentley invites us to reconsider how normative forces operate in global politics—and why understanding them is essential to grappling with the future of biological warfare. |
