Contemporary Challenges in Global Economic Governance (PO9B1)
How are global economic challenges governed in an age of crisis? From financial instability to climate change and global inequality, many of today’s most pressing problems cannot be solved by individual governments alone. This module explores how international organisations, states, and other actors try to manage these issues through systems of global economic governance.
You will examine real-world cases such as the role of the IMF in economic crises, the World Bank’s shifting development agendas, global trade deadlocks at the WTO, the OECD’s work on tax havens, and international cooperation on climate change. Through these examples, you will gain a deeper understanding of the politics, power relations, and controversies that shape the global economy.
By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse how and why different actors govern the global economy as they do, and to think critically about the possibilities and limits of global cooperation in addressing transnational challenges.
