Data Literacies in Displacement (DLiD)
A training tool developed with displaced persons to address the inefficiencies and inequalities of data processes within the humanitarian sector
.
The DLiD training tool
We offer a training tool to address concerns regarding the inefficiencies and inequalities of data processes within the humanitarian sector. The tool is designed to be used by humanitarians involved in the collection and management of data and in data-driven decision-making processes.
The team engages representatives of displaced communities from Nigeria in the production of the tool, with the aim of empowering affected communities. The main objective of the tool is to deepen data literacy across the humanitarian sector through enabling processes of shared learning.
The tool focuses on four dimensions that facilitate this learning:
- The importance of unpacking data rights and responsibilities
- The need to reframe informed consent
- The need to reframe local accountability
- The power of contextualising data
Issues of data responsibility, informed consent and accountability to affected people have all been strongly emphasised within the humanitarian sector over recent years. We start from the observation that the sector has failed to implement these consistently, and that this is indicative of the need for a deepened commitment to the advance of data literacy as a process of shared learning with affected communities.
The DLiD tool invites reflection on the inconsistent application of existing data rights and data responsibility principles within the sector. It also invites reflection on the implications of data-based decision making for processes of informed consent and local accountability. The tool encourages participants to consider the importance of contextualising data and of developing a deepened appreciation of lived experiences of data processes.
