Project overview
The market is without doubt the most important institution of the modern economy. We are required to live ever more elements of our life within settings that respond to market logic, and we are encouraged to think of ourselves as market actors first and citizens second. We are used to hearing how market trends impose themselves upon us, taking away our ability to choose alternative forms of living. However, ‘the market’ is not an actor with a will of its own. The project draws back the veil of such rhetoric to reveal how economists’ market models have been misappropriated to create the image of an economic world of significantly reduced political choice.
