GV17 Maths and Philosophy Course Regulations for students starting in 2021-22 or 2020-21
Please note the below information applies to students commencing their course in the 2021-22 or 2020-21 academic years ONLY. If you commenced your studies at another time, please refer to your course regulations for which you can find the relevant link here.
The first, second, and third year of the programme contribute credit to the final degree classification in the ratio 10:40:50.
Marks in each year are subject to averaging, details of which are explained on the Mathematics website. For details relating to modules run by Maths Department, you should consult the Mathematics undergraduate handbook. Each module is examined under the conventions of the department offering the module.
In each year of the Maths and Philosophy degree students must take a minimum of 120 CATS. Students may if they choose opt to take up to maximum of 150 CATS per year.
First Year
Candidates for Honours degrees are required to take the following core required modules:
- PH144 Mind and Reality (15 CATS)
- PH136 Logic 1: Introduction to Symbolic Logic (15 CATS)
- MA106 Linear Algebra (12 CATS)
- MA133 Differential Equations (12 CATS)
- MA134 Geometry and Motion (12 CATS)
- MA136 Introduction to Abstract Algebra (6 CATS)
- MA137 Mathematical Analysis (24 CATS)
- MA138 Sets and Numbers (12 CATS)
- MA1K2 Refresher Mathematics (not for credit)
- ST111 Probability (Part A, 6 CATS)
Core required modules (with the exception of Refresher Mathematics) must be passed individually in order to proceed into the next year of study.
Students must then select 6 to 36 CATS of optional modules.
Second Year
The normal load is 120 CATS credits, the maximum is 150 CATS (those who have joined the degree prior to 2016/17 may take up to 160 CATS credits but 150 CATS is the recommended maximum load) .

36 CATS credits of second year Mathematics modules. These must include the following core modules:

24 to 54 CATS of other options (this can include additional Philosophy and/or Maths modules).* |

Candidates for Pass degrees are required to take modules totalling 90 to 96 CATS credits, the constitution of which will be decided in individual cases by the Chairs of the Departments concerned. At the discretion of the Chairs of the Departments, the total load may be increased up to a maximum not exceeding 120 CATS credits.
Final Year
The normal load is 120 CATS credits, the maximum is 150 CATS (those who have joined the degree prior to 2016/17 may take up to 160 CATS credits but 150 CATS is the recommended maximum load) .

*Permission to take modules outside of the Philosophy Department must be sought from the Department offering the module before you register for it on eVision. Details of how and when to sign up for external modules can usually be found on that Department's website. If in doubt please contact the Department's Undergraduate Office who will be able to advise you of their sign up processes.
Students on the Maths and Philosophy with Intercalated Year (GV18) course follow the course as set out above, spending the third year on a year abroad or work placement.
