Hermeneutics and Tradition
A Conference organized by the Centre for Research in Philosophy and Literature
Friday 7th November 2003
The main aim of this conference will be to explore the philosophical notion of tradition and how it is linked to hermeneutic philosophy. Moving away from the Kantian stress on the a priori conditions of experience as well as from the opposition between reason and tradition in Romanticism, Hans-Georg Gadamer developed a non-foundationalist conception of tradition. We will consider how to rethink an open-ended conception of tradition in relation to such key contemporary thinkers as Alasdair MacIntyre, Paul Ricoeur, Gianni Vattimo and others.
Sponsored by the Humanitites Reserch Centre
