In Memoriam

David Smith

Damian Veal (1974-2018) former Philosophy Postgraduate student

Professor Andrew Barker

We are very sorry to report the sad news of the death on Thursday 22 July 2021 of Professor Andrew Barker. He had for many years been ill with cancer, but remained positive and stoical throughout his illness, determined to make good use of whatever time he had left. It is reported that when the end came it was fairly swift. Andrew taught in the Department as a Lecturer in Philosophy from 1970-1976 and from 1978-1987 (being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1987). His particular specialisms were Ancient Greek Philosophy and Ancient Greek Music Theory. He contributed much to the development and the reputation of Warwick Philosophy Department throughout those years, and will be remembered with both affection and respect by colleagues and also by his students. Andrew moved to the University of Birmingham in 1996, after a time spent in New Zealand, but he still lived locally, in Leamington Spa, together with his wife, Jill Barker, who completed a PhD in English and Comparative Literature at Warwick in 1992. Andrew's Wikipedia entry gives a good summary of his career: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Barker_(classicist)
