Welcome to Philosophy

Welcome to the Department of Philosophy! In this event, you will see key people in the department who will be on hand to help you settle in to the Department and your course. Students from the Department will tell you more about your Philosophy Society. We will briefly outline essential information for getting started (e.g. important University systems and how to choose your optional modules).

International Student Welcome

Settling into a new country is exciting, but also comes with plenty of new experiences to navigate. Join the Philosophy department and the Wellbeing team for a short, informative session focused on adapting to life in the UK. This will be followed by refreshments and a chance to meet and connect with your fellow international students within the Philosophy department.

Getting Started Doing Philosophy
This session will be led by one of your lecturers, and is designed to get you started doing philosophy. Be prepared to question, discuss, and think! It will also provide you with another opportunity to start to get to know each other.

Please note this session is compulsory for all students on Philosophy (Single Honours), Philosophy with Psychology, Maths and Philosophy, Philosophy and Literature, Philosophy Literature and Classics courses.

Students on History and Philosophy or Philosophy and Global Sustainable Development (GSD) courses are welcome to attend if you are free, but any sessions put on by your home Department should take priority.

Get ready to embark on an exciting philosophically-themed adventure across our beautiful campus. In teams, you’ll solve clues, complete challenges, and explore key locations, all while making new friends and getting to know your way around. You'll also have the chance to win some small prizes!

Philosophy Balloon Debate

Staff in the Department of Philosophy have a deep passion for their subject. Watch as experts in the history of philosophy debate who was the greatest philosopher. Vote for your favourite and ask your questions. This is a great way to get to know the lively philosophical community in the Department of Philosophy!

Current students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) who are returning for their next year of study are also welcome to attend this event. Philosophy Drop-In Session

The aim of this drop-in session is to help you orient during your first week at Warwick. You can drop in to the Philosophy Common Room any time between 11:00 and 15:00 to individually meet staff in the Department and ask any questions you may have.

Everyone is welcome to drop in! This session is particularly recommended for:

Students who missed the Welcome to Philosophy induction on Monday;
Students who have questions left unanswered in the induction talks;
International students who would like to familiarise themselves with the higher education context in the UK;
Students who feel unsure about what to expect from university study and life and would like to know;
Students who would like to know more about reasonable adjustments at the University of Warwick.

This session is also an opportunity to meet key people in the Philosophy Department who are likely to accompany you during your journey at Warwick.
