TEACHING STAFF - APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE ON WINDOWS 7 IN WBS TEACHING ROOMS

All WBS teaching room PCs have run Windows 7 since the start of this academic year. All lecturers are asked to check the list of software available at the following link and to let us know of any additional software required (the fact that a piece of software is available on your Windows XP machine in your office does not necessarily imply it will be available in a teaching room).

QUALTRICS SITE LICENCE - ADVANCED SURVEYING SOFTWARE

The Doctoral Programme Office (DPO) have purchased an unlimited WBS site licence for the advanced surveying software Qualtrics. This licence runs until 30th June 2012. There is no guarantee that the licence will be renewed although the DPO have indicated they would be interested in sharing the cost with other programmes in the future. We shall alert PhD researchers and students to this new facility so please do not re-post this information.

VIRUS PROBLEMS IN CENTRAL UNIVERSITY TEACHING ROOMS

There have been an increase in virus activity in central university rooms. Within WBS we have so far seen few problems and believe ourselves to be well prepared for the following reasons:

*) Our widespread use of Windows 7 reduces the risk of infection

*) Our reduction in user rights limits the changes that can be made to a computer and makes infection both less likely and easier to resolve

*) 'Autorun' has been disabled to reduce the risk of viruses spreading by USB sticks or similar. When inserting a USB stick please use 'My Computer' to access your files.

There remains the risk of infection however, particularly for users who teach in central university rooms. To reduce the risk:

*) Avoid using USB sticks when teaching in central university rooms (http://files.warwick.ac.uk is an alternative)

*) Virus scan all memory sticks regularly

*) Virus scan your computer at least weekly

DHL WEB SHIPPING

DHL have ceased development and support for their desktop 'DHL Connect' application. Whilst this will still be provided for XP users, Windows 7 users should use the DHL Web Shipping service instead (XP users can also opt to do this). This offers a number of advantages, in particular having your shipping address book saved 'in the cloud' meaning it can never be lost and is available from any computer. For more details, including an important message about the need to print two airway bills,  see the Estates Office website at: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/estates/services/postport/postroom/dhl (look towards the bottom of that page for the section entitled 'DHL Web Shipping').

PROBLEM FORWARDING EMAILS USING WEBMAIL

The previously announced problem with forwarding attachments in Webmail remains. We have an open support call with the external archive system's developers regarding this.  The GroupWise client program on your computer is not affected. While awaiting a permanent fix please:

- For all email activity (reading, forwarding mails etc) use http://webmail2.wbs.ac.uk (note the 2 in the address).

- For access to archived emails (i.e. those received prior to Nov 2008) continue to use http://webmail.wbs.ac.uk

UPDATING MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS

Windows 7 users may be seeing a pop-up saying there is a new version of their antivirus software available.  If you are seeing this message run the MSE 2.0 application from the 'Run Advertised Programs' link on your desktop. The new version further improves the security provided for your work.

SPSS LICENCE CODES

Licence codes for SPSS were due to expire last week. WBS computers will have had these updated automatically provided the PC has logged into the WBS network in the last couple of weeks. If you have installed SPSS on a private computer please email us (help@wbs.ac.uk) to get the new codes.

MATHEMATICA - VERSION 8 PLUS LICENCE CODES

Mathematica version 7 codes will have expired on private computers (or WBS computers that have not connected to the network in the last few weeks). Version 7 codes can be renewed via https://register.wolfram.com . To install version 8 please run the application from 'Run Advertised Programs'. Windows XP users wanting to install the latest version should contact us (help@wbs.ac.uk) .  To install version 8 on a private computer visit http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/go/software/list/mathematica/ .
