DON'T GET TRICKED BY FAKE SECURITY WARNINGS

We are receiving an increasing number of calls regarding viruses and spyware on WBS-owned computers caused by users clicking on fake security warnings. WBS uses Kaspersky as its anti-virus software. Any other pop-ups offering anti-virus scans or warning of security problems should be treated with extreme care. Never click on such warnings without checking with us first.

WINDOWS 7 - ROLL OUT CONTINUING

Our Windows 7 pilot is running successfully. We have already upgraded some student machines in the PG IT Suite and over summer we plan to upgrade all open-access student machines. We will be contacting staff who have previously volunteered to upgrade to Win7. All new computers will be installed with Win7 by default while staff who have their computers reimaged will be given the option of using the new operating system. Information to help this choice is at http://help.wbs.ac.uk/kb/software/windows/whichos/  .

PHISHING EMAILS - TRYING TO STEAL YOUR PRIVATE INFORMATION

Be aware of "phishing" emails that ask for your account details or private information. Criminals often monitor University websites and may time such emails to coincide with announced work or changes to systems. Don't be fooled. Never provide personal information such as passwords in emails. If in doubt contact the Helpdesk.
