SAVINGS trial
Welcome the SAVINGS Trial website.
The study investigates, with the use of a in-depth qualitative investigation, ways to promote saving behaviour, using behavioural science, reinforcement learning and psychology. The study involves having participants monitor own finances, identifying areas where they overspend and want to cut back on.

The SAVINGS Trial is a trial taking place at both the University of Warwick (Coventry, United Kingdom) and Monash University (Melbourne, Australia).
Duration: 12 weeks
Sample: 360 Participants across University of Warwick & Monash University
Involves: 2.5 hour lab session then 12 weeks randomised trial.
Those who take part will be randomised to one of three conditions:
- Habit – These participants will be asked to form a savings habit, and track how they spend money for three months on a provided card.
- Goal-Setting – These participants will be asked to set incremental goals to save a larger amount of money, and track how they spend money for three months using a provided spread sheet.
- Control – These participants will be asked to save money as they normally would for three months.
Tools
Habit Tool: To help participants throughout the trial, we provide a credit-card sleeve that participants use to record the number of substitutions they make as they form a new habit.
Goal-Setting Tool: To help participants set their goals we designed a web-based spreadsheet to complete and update during the course of the study.
