Jonathan studies Engineering at Warwick. This summer he volunteered at Makapula High in Kayamandi, South Africa:

I never thought my experience in Tanzania from two years ago could be matched, but wow, was I wrong! It was incredible!

Makupula High has a very big case of smoking at school, so I created a poster to show the physical effects of smoking on the body. On the other side of the sheet was steps to quit smoking. The result of this across the school was amazing - I had teachers come up to me to say how much the learners were talking about it after class. Learners also came up to me privately to ask for help on quitting after school, and I will never forget the gasps when they saw the lungs and heart damage smoking causes.

I made countless special relationships, but the one closest to my heart has to be with a grade 8 student called Zuko. He has no parents and was a victim of abuse, but since week 1 there was a spark in him, and his final exam grade was 91%. Never have I met someone so respectful, hardworking and funny at the same time!

I will forever cherish the memories of all my students and co-teachers, and cannot wait to return to Kayamandi in a few years time."
