Nurturing community-based engineering programmes in Higher Education in Asia
The 
ENHANCE project has successfully delivered three practice-dialogue workshops in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam between 17 – 28 February 2019. The workshops were hosted by the partner institutions of University of Dhaka (DU), Universitas Gadja Mada (UGM) and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT).
The workshops were attended by more than 200 stakeholders (academics, industry professionals, Non Government Organisation and Government Organisation representatives) who discussed the opportunities and challenges in Higher Education in Asia for nurturing community-based engineering.
Invited speakers involved Professor Muhammad Samad, DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Nguyen Danh Thao HCMUT Vice Rector, Professor Vo Le Phu, HCMUT Dean of Environment & Natural Resources, Professor Irfan Dwidya Prijambada, UGM Director of Community Service.
ENHANCE team at Universitas Gadja Mada, Indonesia
During the workshops, the delegates visited a students’ exhibition at UGM, a biogas plant and a water conservation and supply system at Yogyakarta (Indonesia) and a UNESCO mangrove biosphere reserve near Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam).
The Warwick team, Georgia Kremmyda (ENHANCE Lead), Toby Mottram (Head of Civil Engineering), Volkan Degirmenci (Director of International Collaborations) and Irwanda Laory also delivered a series of seminars to more than 150 UG, PGT and PGR students from the host institutions on humanitarian engineering, tunnelling and underground space, structural health monitoring and other teaching and research activities within the Warwick School of Engineering.
At DU, the Warwick team had a meeting with the Vice Chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman to discuss the possibility of undertaking collaborative teaching and research projects, involving exchange of staff and students between the two Universities.
Professor Panut Mulyono (Rector) and Professor Nizam (Dean Faculty of Engineering) of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, hosted a dinner where discussions took place on the progress and furthering of developments for joint educational programmes between UGM and the University of Warwick.
Similar discussions took place with the Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, coordinated by Professor Nguyen Quoc Hien (Dean of the Faculty of Transportation Engineering) and Dr Nguyen Tien Thuy (Director of International Education and Cooperation Institute).
