Global Partnership Scholar Reception 2022

The University recently hosted the Reception for Global Partnership Scholars 2022. This year we celebrated the successes of over 170 outstanding scholars from 49 countries in securing highly prestigious and competitive scholarships awarded by the University of Warwick or international funding bodies with whom the University partners.

Recognised at this event were scholars funded by the Albukhary Foundation, ANID, Ashinaga, Bolashaq, the British Council (GREAT, Women in STEM and Warm Welcome scholarship programmes), Chevening, the Commonwealth Commission, the China Scholarship Council, COLFUTURO, FUNED, the FIDERH Foundation, Hondufuturo, Marshall, the Saïd Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, Sanctuary, the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman and the Turkish Ministry of Higher Education.

Also recognised at this event were our Warwick Chancellor’s International scholars as well as scholars from the SUSTech-Warwick Collaborative PhD Mobility Programme, the Monash Warwick Joint PhD Programme and Warwick EUTOPIA PhD scholarship scheme.

Professor Christine Ennew OBE, our Provost and event host, highlighting the achievement of sponsored students and the importance of international funding partnerships, stated: “This event was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of an outstanding group of international students all of whom secured competitive scholarships to study at Warwick. We are delighted that we have been able to work in partnership with international funding bodies to maximise the opportunities available to talented students who wish to advance their education in their chosen field.”

Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Kevin Maton, gave an impassioned speech at the event, praising the scholars for choosing to study at Warwick and highlighting how Coventry has changed over the years to become a brilliant destination for students to call home for the length of their studies.

Prof. Mike Shipman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) and Roberta Wooldridge Smith, Interim Academic Registrar, introduced and recognised each group of scholars and the fantastic breadth of nationalities on campus they represent.

Maria Eugenia, FIDERH scholar from Mexico, said: “Thanks for giving me the chance to explore new horizons, meet new people and develop great skills that will help me build an amazing foundation for the future. My heart is filled with gratitude.”

Assel, a Bolashaq scholar from Kazahkstan, reflected that they are grateful for “the opportunity to study in such a prestigious university, to meet wonderful and bright people and explore astonishing places.”

The Welcome Reception for Global Partnership Scholars 2022 was the first scholar event of this scale hosted at the University post pandemic. It is hoped this event will continue to take place annually to mark both the achievement of sponsored students and our international funding partnerships.
