The Work of the Placement Learning Unit

Tuesday 20 March, 12:30pm–1:30pm (Seminar Room, University House)
This session, led by Stephen Ward – Head of External Relations, Student Careers & Skills and Emma Nugent – Placement Learning Manager, will look at the role the Placement Learning Unit plays in delivering Warwick’s 2015 strategy to prepare students for their lives beyond Warwick.

Warwick’s HEIF-funded Placement Learning Unit is aimed squarely at supporting student employability through promoting the availability, student awareness and take-up of quality assured internships and work experience. The Unit’s remit is additional to that established within academic departments to support mandatory or optional years abroad, intercalated years in industry, and professional or clinical experience required by the course of study. It therefore places the focus on those students who may otherwise graduate without completing a placement or internship and without the opportunity to gain the confidence, knowledge, skills, and networks to support entry into their chosen graduate employment or further study.

With the obvious need to engage not just with students but with academic colleagues, personal tutors, and employers, this session is intended to set out the immediate and longer term priorities, and to give those attending an opportunity to discuss and raise questions about the work of the unit. The session is aimed at all staff.

By the end of the session you will have:

  • Understood the aims and objectives of the Placement Learning Unit

  • Learned how the Unit aims to deliver benefits to students, academics, and employers

  • Developed ideas for discussion with your own colleagues about placement learning

  • Discussed and asked questions about the role of the unit
